Brief History

The city of Rhodes is a living testament to a history as rich and layered as the cobblestones of its medieval streets. Founded in 408 BC, the city flourished as a major maritime and cultural center of the ancient world. It was here that the legendary Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood guard overlooking the harbor. The city’s most significant transformation, however, came with the arrival of the Knights of St. John in the 14th century. They fortified the city, creating an imposing, a "Frankish" town long considered to be impregnable, with a magnificent castle at its heart. This medieval city is one of the best-preserved in Europe, with its Upper Town, built by the Knights, and the Lower Town, which features a blend of medieval and Ottoman architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the venue for RhodesMRC Opening Ceremony.

Exploring this walled city is like stepping back in time, where every alley and every stone tells a story of sieges, trade, and cultural exchange.

The new city built during the late-ottoman and Italian-occupation period, features the diverse architectural backdrop for RhodesMRC.

How to get here

Reaching Rhodes is simple.

Participants can fly directly to Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (RHO), which has excellent connections with major European cities. While direct flights are more frequent during the summer, many airlines continue to operate routes into October. Otherwise, you connect with Rhodes through Athens.

The airport is just a short drive from the city center, and you can easily reach your accommodation by taxi or public bus.

Alternatively, you may come to Rhodes from Piraeus by ferryboat.
