The League of Arab States, also known as the Arab League, is a union of Arab-speaking nations situated in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region. It was established in Cairo, Egypt in 1945 in order to foster the independence, sovereignty, interests and collaboration of its 22 member states. Moreover, 5 states participate in the League with an observer status: Brazil, India, Armenia, Venezuela and Eritrea. The administrative center and headquarters of the League of Arab States are situated in Cairo. The Arab League set itself various objectives, such as maintaining peace and security between member-states, facilitating cooperation in a number of fields and preserving the solidarity of Arab States in the face of external threats. The Council of the Arab League, which will be simulated in RhodesMRC, is the highest body of the organization in which all members are represented, assembled twice a year, but also holds unforeseen meetings. The Council presidency works on a rotating basis. This year Tunisia holds the presidency.
The Council of LAS holds authority in:
- Observing the implementation of agreements amongst the member states in numerous aspects;
- Arbitrating and settling disputes between member states in a peaceful manner;
- Acting ,applying the necessary measures, in order to avert any hostilities towards any member state;
- Regulating the methods of cooperation under the auspices of international bodies and organizations, in an effort to maintain global peace and security.
